So his entire salary day-to-day is off the cap.

Seems like it could be tricky...

The way the LTIR works, the habs still have to pay him his full salary (unless they have some sort of insurance), but the entire salary isn't counted against the cap.

The tricky thing with the cap is, it's calculated on a day-to day basis; so on any given day, you cannot have more than 56.8million (the cap) divided by 193 (the number of days in the season) dollars commited to players on the active NHL roster (a max of 23 players). So for the duration of Markov's injury, they an add an equivalent salary. Once he becomes active again, it's crunch time!

Thanks for your comments Olivier!

One thing is for sure with the younger guys like D'Agostini and MaxPac....

They have to be playing. If they can't produce and win Martin's confidence, then they're almost better off going back to Hamilton and getting lots of ice time.

I'm still hopeful... I'd love to see them have strong games in this stretch of home games coming up.

What percentage of Markov's salary is off the cap once he hits the LTIR?

MaxPac and D'Agostini are what baseball analysts call AAAA players right now. Too good for the AHL, not good enough to crack a top 9 at the NHL level. I'd love to have Pacioretty and, if possible, D'Agostini groomed on the 4th line with Metropolit for at least half of the season. They can both jump in as replacements / kicks in the ass for guys on the #2 and #3 lines, but are better off learning the ropes on the 4th, I think.

But that leaves us one body short up front. Laraque is borderline as a 8 minutes 4th liner / deterrent, so you can't get him up there, and neither can Stewart. And we don't have anyone on the farm who we can push up to the top 9 for now. SKost was supposed to do that, but they obviously have to brake him at the AHL level for now, and even tough I think we'll see him again, I don't think that'll happen before January.

We'd really need some 3rd-line grinder to push Latendresse in the top 6 and keep the kids down on the 4th line until they can actually earn their spot.

All in all, the other shoe hasn't dropped yet. Once Markov hits the LTIR, I think Bob will move swiftly and we'll then have a better idea of where we stands. Nothing can happen until then; we are 290 000$ under the cap according to CapGeek...
